What are the origins of this story?

This is a fairly convoluted origin story. It began in 2006 with a writing prompt in a challenge on the Liberty Hall writers site, though I no longer recall what the prompt was. I liked the little seed and decided to write it as my NaNoWriMo novel that year. It was a lot of fun, but also convinced me that I should really try outlining things because, wow. Wow, that plot had a lot of holes. Meanwhile, we sold my first novel, which is historical fantasy, and a science-fiction murder mystery didn’t seem like a good follow-up. Then Sheila Williams asked me if I had a novella for Asimov’s, so I created an outline and fixed the plot holes, and cut “Kiss Me Twice” down.
